Science Cheerleader The Science Cheerleaders have partnered with the Hammond High Diamonds (a club for African American females who have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and above). The goal of the Baltimore-area program is to provide young ladies with the resources and foundation needed to realize their full potential in Science, Technology, Engineering, Creative-Arts and Math (STEAM).
On March 5, local Science Cheerleaders (current and former cheerleaders pursuing science careers) will help celebrate the success and achievements of this select group of students along with the scholars, their parents, teachers, county administrators and program partners, including Discovery Education.
Invited SciCheers include current and former Baltimore Ravens cheerleaders: Dana, Joanna, Sammi Jo, Kristen and NaShanta.
The evening will include inspirational messages that focus on confidence, leadership and perseverance, informational sessions on college and career exploration, summer enrichment programs and paid internships. The event will also launch the start of an ongoing partnership between the Science Cheerleaders and the Hammond Diamonds, which will include monthly visits by the SciCheers to talk about science/engineering careers as women and to introduce a Citizen Science project of the month!
Each participating Science Cheerleader will also talk about:
* Career path — inspirations, special mentors, summer programs, influences, favorite teachers and school subjects
* Current job – 2-3 things they love about their job
* Over coming 1-2 BIG challenges in life – School K-12, college and parents
* Breaking through the stereotypes — personal philosophy on women in science
* Show and Tell—demonstrate use of a specialized piece of equipment or attire used in their work.
In addition, the Hammond High Diamonds will participate in the Big Cheer for Science on 4/27/12! You can participate, too! Click here to learn more!
