Hi Science Cheerleader fans! SciCheer Wendy here. I’ve had an awesome year, and I wanted to share some of it with you.
I attended a fun event I attended back in April. As a Ph.D. candidate, I’ve attended and presented my research at several national engineering conferences. This past April, I attended the American Association of Endodontists Annual Meeting as a Science Cheerleader and guest of Sonendo. Sonendo hosted a 5K “fun run” in the early morning hours before the second day of the conference. I was there to lead the runners in a warm up and take pictures with them after they crossed the finish line. Learning about the exciting discoveries others in my field are making and sharing my own findings is one of the most fun parts of being a scientist. And as a professional cheerleader, physical fitness is very important to me. It was great to see the huge turn-out of scientists, doctors, and researchers for the fun run who value the same things I do!

Also in 2017, I defended my Ph.D. and completed my fourth and final season with the Oakland Raiderettes.

So THIS Science Cheerleader is now Doc Brown! After graduating, I moved down to Southern California where I’m still doing research on cartilage engineering, but now with an additional focus on the clinical applications of orthopaedic and musculoskeletal therapies. Retiring from the Raiderettes and moving doesn’t mean I’m done cheering, though. I’ll still be cheering for my Raiders, loud as ever, from the stands (or my couch). And I’ll still be cheering for science and remain an active advocate for women in STEM through my work with the Science Cheerleader.

Finally, on a more serious note: As everyone deals with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, please keep Science Cheerleader Summer, SciCheer Space Guy Mark, and all our pro cheer sisters in Houston in your thoughts.
