Here a brief piece I just wrote for DiscoverMagazine.com about how acoustical science is being used to help give an edge to the 2011 Penn State Football Team. Happy Friday!
(Thank to Russ Campbell for the tip.)

So much for calling audibles…I’ll be interested to see what visiting teams come up with as a countermeasure. The battle for victory is eternal!

Reminds me (a little bit) of a a short story by Arthur C. Clarke titled “A Slight Case of Sunstroke” in which there was a yearly, heated rivalry between two small nations in football (a.k.a., soccer). It was assumed that the referees were corrupt so that the host country always won in that particular year.
However, the visiting country distributed thousands of silver backed event cards to their fans, and when corrupt ref made a bad call, all of a sudden each opposing fan “accidentally” used their silvered cards as mirrors, focusing on the ref who burst into flames and was vaporized. For the rest of the game, the remaining refs were “biased” towards the visiting team, and for the first time they won on opposing soil.
A fun read, and argueably (very argueably), it could (maybe) work…

Perhaps Penn State should not play at M.I.T.?
John: HA! I remember that story! Funny.
Great story. Just passed the link along to some Penn State friends.
