Earth Day
Earth Day is approaching next week on April 22, and there are tons of great events and parties designed to combine scientific awareness with fun for all ages.  Don’t miss out on all of the great events happening in your area to celebrate eco-awareness! Here are just a few.

  • Walt Disney Studios has launched a new movie production company called Disneynature, which is dedicated to releasing high quality nature documentaries for the big screen.  Their first movie, called Earth, is being released on Earth Day in theaters nationwide.
  • The Green Apple Festival is sponsoring volunteer projects in New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Austin, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle on April 17 – April 19.  This is the largest volunteer movement since Earth Day began in 1970, and there are many community projects to choose from in each city.  Participants will be rewarded with thank-you concerts in each city at the end of the festival on April 19.
  • The Philadelphia Zoo is hosting Party for the Planet on Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.  This party will feature musical performances, games throughout the zoo, and booths from local environmental groups.  Don’t forget to bring your retired sneakers, cell phones, plastic bottles, and newspapers to recycle!
  • Ben and Jerry’s is giving out free ice cream!  Each year on or around Earth Day, Scoop Shops everywhere give free scoops of ice cream, frozen yogurt, or sorbet from 12 pm – 8 pm.  This year’s Free Cone Day is on April 21.  (Okay, you caught me…this one is lacking a bit in scientific merit…)
